Axis launches licence plate camera kits for traffic

Axis Communications has introduced three licence plate recognition camera kits with AXIS Licence Plate Verifier preinstalled. The products are designed for vehicle identification in both slow-speed and free-flow traffic.

The range includes one model for controlled access points and two for moving traffic, with processing carried out on the camera rather than on external servers.

The AXIS P3285-LVE Kit Licence Plate Verifier is intended for slow-speed traffic at entrances, exits and other managed access locations. The 2 MP dome camera supports vehicle access control, with allow and block lists handled directly on the device.

The model is also vandal-resistant, allowing installation at lower, more accessible heights. It is aimed at sites such as car parks and logistics facilities, where operators need to identify vehicles as they approach barriers or gates.

For roads and other areas with uninterrupted vehicle movement, Axis has launched the AXIS P1485-LE Kit Licence Plate Verifier and the AXIS P1486-LE Kit Licence Plate Verifier. Both use bullet cameras and are designed to capture number plates in free-flow traffic.

The P1485-LE uses a 2 MP camera, while the P1486-LE uses a 3 MP camera and includes global shutter technology. According to Axis, this helps produce low-distortion images of fast-moving vehicles and enables plate capture across two lanes of free-flow traffic.

All three kits are intended to work in difficult lighting conditions. Under optimal conditions, the cameras can also identify vehicle type, colour, make and model as well as read number plates.

The systems process data on the device itself, removing the need for external servers. This reflects a broader industry move towards edge-based analytics in security and transport monitoring, as companies seek to reduce hardware demands and simplify installation.

The kits are built on open APIs and can be integrated with Axis video management products as well as third-party systems. This allows organisations to connect licence plate recognition data with existing security, access control and operational processes.

Each of the three camera kits also includes electronic image stabilisation to support smooth video across different mounting positions.

Market use

Licence plate recognition has become a common tool for businesses and public sector operators managing vehicle movements, parking access and traffic flows. Demand has grown for systems that can be deployed without separate processing infrastructure, particularly at distributed sites where operators want a more self-contained setup.

Axis is positioning the products around these use cases, from gate-controlled locations to higher-speed traffic environments. The distinction between the dome-based and bullet-based models suggests it is targeting buyers with different operational requirements rather than offering a single camera for every setting.

Simon Emmons, Sales Manager, UK & Ireland, at Axis Communications, outlined the intended uses of the products.

"From managing access to car parks and logistics sites to monitoring free-flow traffic, organisations need accurate vehicle identification that is simple to deploy. These new all-in-one LPR camera kits provide reliable insight without additional servers, while integrating easily with existing systems," said Emmons.

The launch adds to Axis's wider portfolio in video surveillance, access control and analytics. The Sweden-headquartered group employs about 5,000 people across more than 50 countries and has been expanding its software and analytics offering alongside its camera hardware.

The new kits reflect that combined approach by bringing imaging, licence plate recognition software and processing into one package. One of the higher-specification models is designed to read plates across two lanes of free-flow traffic.
