Journey Alerts launches Paris rail WhatsApp updates

Journey Alerts has gone live on SNCF Transilien's Paris rail network, marking the company's first deployment outside the UK.
Passengers on RER lines C and D can now receive real-time travel updates through WhatsApp following a pilot that began in June. The two commuter lines carry 1.2 million passengers a day across 134 stations, making the launch a significant expansion for the London-based passenger information platform.
It is also the first use in France of a British real-time messaging platform on the national rail network at scale. SNCF Transilien is using the system as part of a broader effort to modernise passenger communications, particularly during disruption.
Journey Alerts had to adapt its product for the Paris network because its service pattern differs from the fixed timetables that shape much of Britain's rail system. It developed a new "metro mode" for high-frequency services, where passengers typically arrive and board the next available train rather than plan around a specific departure.
The system uses traveller confirmations to determine whether a passenger boarded a service, then triggers automatic replanning if a connection is missed. Updates are sent directly to passengers' phones, and the service is accessed through QR codes displayed on passenger information screens, without requiring an app or account.
Journey Alerts already works with LNER, South Western Railway, East Midlands Railway and Bedford Borough Council's bus network. The company says the platform has 1.5 million users and a 98% retention rate, although separate background material put its user base at 2.3 million across the UK.
According to Journey Alerts, early passenger response in Paris has been positive, with satisfaction above 80% and a quarter of users already using the service daily. The pilot on RER lines C and D will continue for 12 months.
Alex Froom, Chief Strategy Officer at Journey Alerts, described the Paris launch as both an operational milestone and a technical test for the platform in a different transport environment.
He said: "We're delighted to be part of the team bringing real-time updates to Paris travellers, and it's a significant moment for us as we take our technology beyond the UK for the first time. To do this, we needed something different from what we'd built for the UK. Passengers on a metro line don't check a timetable; they just turn up, so we had to build a mode that understands that pattern. Seeing that work at this scale, on one of the busiest commuter lines into a capital city, shows that the same reliable, cost-effective technology can be adapted for very different use cases. Metro, bus or train, passengers have different needs and expectations, but what they all need is timely, accessible information."
The Paris deployment gives the company a foothold in continental Europe at a time when transport authorities are under pressure to improve passenger communications without major increases in spending. Messaging through widely used consumer apps such as WhatsApp may also offer operators a way to reach passengers directly without asking them to download a dedicated transport app.
For SNCF Transilien, the focus is on improving the passenger experience when normal service is disrupted. Direct alerts can help regular commuters and less frequent travellers alike, especially on a network as large and complex as the Paris suburban rail system.
Tony Zoghby, Head of Operations and Passenger Information at SNCF Voyageurs and Transilien, said: "Passenger information is central to how our customers experience their journey, especially during disrupted periods, whether they travel with us every day or less frequently. Working with Journey Alerts enabled us to take real-time passenger information to the next level. Their solution gives RER C and D passengers a direct, personalised channel to receive the right information, at the right time, when they need it most. It's a meaningful step forward in how we communicate with our passengers, and an approach we're excited to continue building on across our network."
