RETN launches London-Brussels route to boost resilience

RETN has launched a new London-Brussels internet route, adding another path between the UK and mainland Europe.

The route is intended to strengthen resilience in its UK-mainland Europe network at a time when traffic remains concentrated on a small number of established cross-border corridors.

Connectivity between the UK and Europe has long depended on a limited set of hubs, notably Amsterdam and Paris. That concentration has heightened scrutiny of route diversity as network operators and customers assess the risks of outages or disruption affecting subsea or terrestrial infrastructure.

The new Brussels route provides an alternative path into continental Europe and reduces reliance on traditional transit points. RETN said this should improve service continuity for customers that depend on uninterrupted links for business-critical operations.

Alternative path

A key part of the build is newly constructed Rotterdam-Brussels dark fibre, which forms the basis of RETN's own DWDM network in Belgium. By extending direct control over that section, the operator is seeking tighter oversight of a segment it considers strategically important.

Within London, the route uses a geographically separate exit path rather than the heavily used Docklands egress routes that carry large volumes of international traffic from East London data centre clusters. It also uses a different landing station from RETN's previously announced CrossChannel UK-EU route, which departs from Slough, west of London.

That design gives the new route an added level of physical separation for traffic entering and leaving the UK. In practice, operators pursuing resilience often seek not only spare capacity but also infrastructure that avoids the same ducts, landing stations, exchanges or metro corridors as existing routes.

The investment reflects a broader shift in telecoms infrastructure planning. As digital traffic volumes rise and more companies depend on cloud services, financial trading links and cross-border data flows, network buyers have placed greater weight on whether alternative routes are genuinely separate rather than only nominally redundant.

Physical diversity has become more prominent following repeated industry concerns about chokepoints in both marine cable systems and land-based backhaul routes. Where multiple services traverse the same corridor, a single incident can affect connections that appear to be separate.

For providers with multinational footprints, route engineering has become a commercial differentiator as well as an operational discipline. Customers in sectors such as finance, media, cloud infrastructure and digital platforms often ask for evidence that backup paths do not share hidden dependencies with primary links.

RETN operates its own network across Europe and Asia. It describes itself as an independent provider focused on long-distance connectivity across Eurasia, with land routes running through Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia towards China and onward into Southeast Asia.

Resilience focus

The Brussels launch fits that wider footprint by adding another continental entry point from the UK. It also expands RETN's direct infrastructure presence in Belgium, where the new dark fibre segment supports the development of its optical network.

Tony O'Sullivan outlined the rationale for the project in a statement accompanying the launch. "Building resilient networks is no longer simply about adding capacity - it's about creating genuine physical diversity," said Tony O'Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer, RETN.

He added: "As international traffic becomes increasingly concentrated on a limited number of routes, customers need unique alternatives that strengthen business continuity. Our new London-Brussels route delivers exactly that."
